Dental gold (dental alloy) is a gold alloy used in dentistry for gold crowns, bridges, inlays, and onlays. Since pure gold (24K) is far too soft to withstand bite forces and saliva, it is alloyed with other metals to become durable and chemically stable. Common alloy metals in dental gold are:

• Silver and copper: The most common additions, increasing hardness.

• Palladium: Enhances the gold's strength and corrosion resistance. Palladium sometimes occurs in relatively high proportions, adding extra value.

• Platinum: Found in some premium alloys, raises the melting point and further improves durability.

Dental gold can therefore sometimes contain more than just gold – which is why a careful XRF analysis is particularly important.

The gold content in dental gold varies depending on the type of alloy and country of manufacture, but is usually in the range of 16K–22K (67–92% gold). Older European crowns from 1960–1990 are typically 18K–20K, while North American dental gold can sometimes be lower (14K).

The value is based solely on the precious metal content (gold, and any palladium and platinum) – not on the crown as a whole. Any tooth remnants, porcelain, acrylic, or cement are not included in the value weight. We take care of all cleaning with professional equipment, so you don't need to do anything beforehand.
