Popular Shapes and Their Character
In addition to the round brilliant (57 facets, optimized for maximum light return), there are many 'fancy cuts'. Each has its unique character:
• Princess: Square shape with sharp corners and 58+ facets. Very popular in modern engagement rings. Requires extra protection at the corners in the setting.
• Emerald: Rectangular with step-like facets and an open table. Highlights clarity – best suited for VS quality and above.
• Cushion: Square or rectangular with rounded corners. One of the oldest shapes, popular since the 1800s and now trending again.
• Oval: Similar to a round brilliant but with an oval shape. Creates the impression of longer, slimmer fingers.
• Pear: Teardrop-shaped combination of oval and marquise. Popular in pendants and earrings.
• Marquise: Boat-shaped cut with pointed ends. Maximizes visible size per carat.
• Heart: A romantic shape requiring technically demanding symmetry. Valued as a symbolic gift.
